Abstract

Poetry has been the primary genre related to music in Chilean literature; however, contemporary narrative also shows interesting incipient references. Consequently, this article focuses on the Antología del cuento chileno reciente (2022), where two texts incorporate art music into their narrative plot. This allows for exploring the methodology, effects and function that renowned modern and contemporary authors have employed. Specifically, two categories by Werner Wolf that characterize the musicalization of fiction are used: explicit thematization and implicit imitation of art music. One does so through a narrative that problematizes musical stereotypes and another through voices that unfold similarly to a fugue's musical subject, response, and countersubject.
