Abstract

The purpose of this article is to date more precisely the origins of Andrés Bello’s posthumously published work, Filosofía del entendimiento (1881). It examines the ten chapters published in El Crepúsculo (1843- 1844) and compares them to the versions that appeared in the Chilean and Venezuelan editions of Bello’s complete works. It concludes, based on the evidence provided by Bello’s annotated set of the journal, that most revisions were made in the 1840s and 1850s–an important time frame to properly ascertain the genealogy and context of his philosophical ideas.
