Fauna in native vegetation and forest plantations in Quintay’s periurban land: An opportunity for natural heritage conservation on the coast of central Chile

Abstract

The coast of central Chile has experienced rapid urbanization, threatening fauna in a biodiversity hotspot. To analyze the contribution in the conservation of fauna of the peri-urban vegetation of the town of Quintay, we evaluated vertebrate fauna (amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals) in relicts of hygrophilous forests (n=2), sclerophyllous scrub (n=3) and forest plantations (n=3). The native vegetation (hygrophilous forests and sclerophyllous scrub) supported greater number of endemic and threatened animal species, and greater species richness and abundance of small mammals. Forest plantations presented a greater species richness and abundance of forest bird species. Based on our findings, we proposed recommendations to conserve native fauna, which is part of Quintay’s natural heritage, in the context of urban expansion promoted by its new Regulatory Plan.
