Abstract

The new historiography of independence processes published in recent years has been a breakthrough in our understanding of the military aspect of these events. In dialogue with this new production of the revolutionary wars, this paper proposes to revisit the history of the officer corps of the Auxiliary Army in the Rio de la Plata between the years 1810 and 1820. We will try to reconstruct the profile of the men who joined the corps by means of the literature about the forces of the United Provinces of Rio de la Plata and the existing documentation related to this army in the General Archive of the Nation and the Mitre Museum Archive Belgrano. We seek to answer which were the general features that characterized good officers or professional officers in this particular context and throughout the years, trying to avoid the simple comparison between the military ordinances prescribing what these officers should do and be and the actual behavior of these men.
