Abstract

This text-textile offers a situated reflection on textile creation practices as embodied knowledge and as forms of micropolitical, affective, and epistemological recomposition. From a feminist perspective and grounded in our trajectories as researchers and textileras (textile makers), we approach textiles as both material metaphors and sensitive technologies that enable thinking–enacting other relations between bodies, materials, and knowledges. The text is organized into three stitches: (1) textiles in everyday life as practices of the common; (2) touch as an epistemic gesture and the agency of textile matter; and (3) the dissident temporalities enabled by these practices. The text is fashioned as a gesture of disciplinary overflow that challenges established fields of knowledge and design. As a transformative practice, textile work allows for imagining modes of collaborative creation where knowledge becomes body, rhythm, and connection. This text is a work-in-progress fabric, open to further elaboration.

Fabiana Rivas Monje, Faculty of Social Sciences, Universidad de Chile; Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona

Feminist, textile maker, educator, and researcher. Lecturer at Universidad Academia de Humanismo Cristiano. She is a PhD candidate in Social Sciences at Universidad de Chile and is pursuing a PhD in ‘Person and Society in the Contemporary World’ at Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. After earning her degree in Sociology from the Universidad de La Frontera, she obtained a Master’s degree in Latin American Social Studies from Universidad de Buenos Aires. She is the creator of Mariposa Esquiza Textil and cofounder of Pulso Textil: Feminist and Latin American Studies Group on/with Textiles. Her research focuses on textile practices and objects, Latin American feminisms, memory studies, affect/emotion studies, the sociologies of art, and cultural practices. Her recent publications include: ‘Cuerpo(s) de costurera(s), emociones y capital. Complejidades y potencias del quehacer textil desde una lectura de los cuerpos/emociones’ (Revista Latinoamericana de Estudios sobre Cuerpos, Emociones y Sociedad RELACES, Issue 46); ‘Resistencia del oficio textil en mujeres costureras de Temuco’ (in Resistencia textil: Luchas feministas en Chile contemporáneo, Fulgor, 2024); and ‘De trama y linaje. María Belén Tapia de la Fuente, Department of Social Psychology, Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona

Embroiderer, feminist psychotherapist, educator, and researcher. Lecturer at the Art Therapy School of Universidad de Chile. She is currently pursuing a PhD in ‘Person and Society in the Contemporary World’ at Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. After earning her degree in Psychology from Universidad Alberto Hurtado, she obtained a Master’s degree in Psychology with a specialization in Community Psychology from Universidad de Chile. She is the creator of Bordala Livre and cofounder of Pulso Textil: Feminist and Latin American Studies Group on/with Textiles. Her research explores community-based promotion practices, the common, textiles, Latin American feminisms, and the agency of matter. Her recent publications include: ‘Círculo digital de bordado como método de investigación feminista’ (Revista CS, Issue 38); ‘Investigar bordando: Reflexiones sobre el uso del bordado como técnica de producción de información’ (in Resistencia Textil: Luchas feministas en Chile contemporáneo, Fulgor, 2024); and ‘Los pliegues de la sexualidad: Experiencia transdisciplinar de creación y cuidado entre la danza y el textil’ (coauthored with R. Argandoña and S. García Saavedra; A.Dnz, Issue 6).
